Fowler Bed Deluxe A is a simpler version of our standard Fowler bed, built around one job: raising the backrest so a patient can sit up without needing to be lifted or propped with pillows. A hand crank near the foot end does the adjusting; no motor, no plug point needed anywhere near the bed. The frame is steel with a smooth powder-coat finish, and it sits on wheels so it can be rolled from one room to another when required. The head and foot ends have stainless steel railing for a bit of extra sturdiness. Works well for home patients who mainly need back support rather than full multi-section adjustment.
Description
Not every patient needs a bed with five different moving sections. A lot of the time, what’s actually needed is one thing: being able to sit up a bit, without someone having to physically pull them upright or stuff pillows behind their back that flatten out within the hour. That’s the whole idea behind the Fowler Bed Deluxe A. It’s built around a single adjustable backrest panel, operated with a crank handle fixed near the foot of the bed.
You turn the handle, and the head section lifts. Turn it the other way, it comes back down. That’s it. No wiring, no battery to charge, nothing that needs a technician if something stops working. For home use especially, this kind of simplicity tends to matter more than people expect, because most caregivers aren’t trained to troubleshoot electronics; they just want something that works the same way every single time.
The frame runs on mild steel tubing with a powder coating meant to resist rust. Given that these beds usually get wiped down daily, sometimes with fairly strong disinfectants, a weak coating wears off fast and rust starts showing at the joints within a year. This one’s finished to handle that kind of routine cleaning without much trouble.
At the head and foot ends, you get stainless steel panels rather than plain painted metal. Beyond the obvious hygiene angle, steel railings also add some rigidity to the whole structure, so the bed feels stable even when a patient leans on the edge while getting in or out.
The sleeping surface is a perforated board, not solid sheet metal, which allows some air circulation underneath the mattress. It’s a small thing, but it helps keep the mattress from getting damp or musty over weeks of continuous use.
The bed moves on caster wheels, and they lock. That locking part is more important than it sounds; an unlocked bed that rolls even a few inches while a patient is trying to sit down or stand up is a genuine fall risk. Lock the wheels once it’s positioned, and it stays exactly where you left it.
Who this suits
Who this suits
- Patients who need to sit upright occasionally, for meals, for breathing comfort, for reading, but don’t need knee elevation or other adjustments
- Home caregivers looking for something straightforward, without extra features they won’t use
- Clinics or small nursing setups that want a basic, dependable bed at a lower cost than the full multi-section Fowler bed
- Anyone replacing an ordinary cot with something a bit more purpose-built for recovery or long-term bed rest
How it compares to the full Fowler Deluxe model
The standard Fowler Bed Deluxe has both a backrest section and a separate knee-rest section, each adjustable on its own. Deluxe A drops the knee-rest adjustment and keeps just the backrest crank. If a patient’s main requirement is sitting upright rather than needing pressure relief through knee elevation, Deluxe A does the job at a lower price point without missing anything that patient actually needs.
Maintenance notes
Clean the frame with a mild disinfectant on a regular basis, avoid anything overly abrasive on the powder-coated surface. Test the wheel locks periodically, particularly if the bed is moved often between rooms. If the crank starts feeling tight or stiff to turn, a bit of oil on the mechanism usually fixes it without needing any tools.
